seasonal, off-site farm tours.
Tobacco Farm Tour
Eastern North
Carolina is the heart of tobacco country, so continue your experience
with a visit to a local tobacco farm, with none other than the
tobacco farmer as tour guide. And, although most tobacco is now sold through contract
between farmer and buyer, or tobacco company, there are a handfull of
warehouses which still hold live tobacco auctions. Depending on the
sale schedule, a trip to the warehouse may be possible.
Cotton & Sweet Potato Farm
Tours
Cotton
farm tours are held in October and November. Once at the farm, you
can see cotton in the field, learn about the growing and harvesting
process, then return to the museum to create your own cotton boll
craft.
Sweet potato farm tours are held in September. At the farm, the
farmer will explain the transplanting and harvesting processes.
You’ll also get ideas for preparing sweet potatoes, which are,
by the way, one of nature’s most perfect foods. Younger
visitors can collect their own “sample” to take
home.
Depending on the season, a tour of a local cotton gin or sweet potato
processing facility may be possible.
Strawberry & Produce Farm
Tours
Several local
growers open their farms to the public, with the most popular being
strawberries and pumpkins. Usually, “samples” are
available. These tours are especially popular with elementary school
groups.
