Died: December 5,1968
In Honor of Leora Simmons Baggett
Born: November 8, 1908
Hubert Baggett was born December 25, 1908, to Luther and Novella Baggett who were farmers in Sampson County, North Carolina. He attended Mingo School in this county. Leora Simmons was one of the nine children of Jim and Lula Simmons. She was born November 8, 1908, in Sampson County, North Carolina. During her early life she lived and worked on her parents' farm. Leora was a member of the first graduating class of Herring High School in Sampson County.
Hubert and Leora Baggett were married November 18, 1931, in Clinton, North Carolina. Hubert served in the army for five years. Both Hubert and Leora worked at Fort Bragg during World War II. They came to Kenly in 1945 where he was associated with Simmons Chevrolet. He later worked at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base as manager of the local purchase store.
Hubert and Leora, and their two daughters Jean and Grey, attended Kenly Missionary Baptist Church. Hubert served the church as both a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. Leora is very active in her missionary circle and has served for many years as a dedicated member of the bereavement committee.
Hubert was a member of the Kenly Kiwanis Club.
All members of the Baggett family are avid sports fans, attending local basketball and baseball games. As a high school student, Leora was a forward on the Herring High School team. Having no gym, the games were played outdoors on a dirt court. One of Hubert's favorite activities was attending the Dixie Classics, a holiday basketball tournament held in Raleigh each year and featuring area college teams. The sports tradition has passed into the third and fourth generations since their grandchildren and great-grandchildren play on and coach athletic teams.
Hubert and Leora have two daughters: Jean B. Holland and Grey B. Shackleford; four grandchildren: Jim Shackleford, Jeffrey Shackleford, Joey Holland, and Paula H. Wooten; and six great-grandchildren: Taylor, Kathryn, and Jay Shackleford; April and Samantha Holland; and Michael Wooten.
