Hazel Kirby Barnes

Elvin Rupert Barnes was born to Elvin Barnes and Lillian Ferrell Barnes. Rupert Barnes grew up on his family’s tobacco farm in the St. Mary’s Community in Wilson County. Mr. Barnes served in the United States Army during World War II. Following the war, he assisted with the US Military Occupation in Korea. While serving in the military, Mr. Barnes achieved the rank of Buck Sergeant. Mr. Barnes came back home to serve his community as the A&P Produce Manager in Wayne County. He was well known throughout the community for his strong work ethic. He was an active Member of the American Legion and Kiwanis Club, serving as the Kiwanis Club President. Mr. Barnes’ hobbies included woodworking, collecting antiques and gardening.

Hazel Kirby Barnes was born to Sanford (Jim) Kirby and Cora Scott Kirby. Mrs. Hazel Barnes grew up in the St. Mary’s Community in Wilson County. Hazel taught many students in the Kenly community. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Home Demonstration Club and was honored as Woman of the Year for the Wilson County Home Demonstration Clubs. Mrs. Barnes’ hobbies included sewing and cooking.

Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Barnes were devoted to their family and church. They had two children Susan Kirby Barnes and Elvin Sanford Barnes. The Barnes’ had three granddaughters: Rachel Barnes, Martha Barnes and Sarah Barnes. The family was very active in the Kenly United Methodist Church. Mr. Barnes served as the Kenly United Methodist President of Administrative Council, Pastor Parish Relations and Board of Trustees. Mrs. Barnes served as President of Kenly United Methodist Women and as Sunday School Superintendent. Both Mr. and Mrs. Barnes received the Kenly United Methodist Church Lifetime Service pin.
