The Battens lived on their family farm in the Bethany Community, eight miles from Kenly, on land that originally was part of the Worley Creech Estate. They were the parents of George, Howard, Alice, Thorse, Ethel, Otha (Buck), and Arthur.

The Battens were staunch supporters of Bethany Church, their family, and their community.
