Sox, Carl Caughman

Carl Caughman Sox was born November 1, 1906, To Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lee Sox of Columbia, South Carolina. After graduating from Columbia High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina in 1929. He then attended George Washington University where he earned his M. D. degree in 1932. During his internship at Spartanburg General Hospital (1932-1933), he met Alluwee Babb, who was an x-ray technician from Woodruff, S.C. They were married August 15, 1933. He entered the United States Army during that same year and served for three years as camp surgeon at Fort Bragg, N. C.

Dr. Sox entered private practice in Kenly in 1936 in association with Dr. B. L. Woodard but was recalled to active duty during World War II. From 1941 through 1946 he was assigned to the medical center at Camp Grant, IL for two years and then was reassigned to the Surgeon General's Office in Washington, DC. His duties included operations service, security officer, and atomic energy representative. He was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his discharge in 1946
 he returned to set up his own private practice in Kenly. He was a practicing physician in Kenly for more than 55 years.

In addition to being a much loved and respected doctor, he was also a valuable and active citizen. He was a faithful member of the Kenly United Methodist Church and served on its board. He served as Master of the Kenly Masonic Lodge, was a charter member and served as president of the Kenly Kiwanis Club. He also served on the Kenly Industrial Development Board. He was a National Sojourner Shriner, a York Rite Mason, and a member of the Kenly American Legion. He was honored with the Distinguished Service Award in the Kenly Community in 1985. He was on the original steering committees of Johnston Memorial Hospital, the Johnston County Mental Health Clinic, and the steering committee of Johnston Community College. He also served as trustee of the college for many years. He was granted life memberships in the county, district, state, and national medical associations.

Dr. Sox was one of those unique people who played as hard as he worked. He and his wife, known to her friends as "Peanut," enjoyed an active social life. He had many hobbies and loved fishing and playing golf with his friends. He usually found somewhere to fish every week, whether it was in a local pond, a lake, or the ocean. The Soxes had two children, a son, Carl C. Sox, Jr. (Sonny), who lives in Florida; and a daughter, Sandra Starling, who lives in Kenly. They also were blessed with 5 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Dr. Sox was a doctor loved and respected for his dedication to his patients. He ministered to his patients with a blend of wit, common sense, and knowledge that was respected and appreciated by all.
