Barnes, Glennie P

Memorial contribution by her granddaughter, Suzanne S. Bailey

In Memory of Glennie P. Barnes

If a task is once begun, Never leave it 'til it's done.
Be the labor great or small, Do it well or not at all!

Arthur and Glennie Barnes

Glennie Poythress was born June 8, 1902, and was one of six children of William and Geneva Poythress. In 1917, she became the wife and helpmate of Richard Arthur Barnes. She remained on their original farm until 1977 , tending the farm alone after her husband's lingering illness and death in 1964, until her own illness forced her retirement in the early 1970's.

Glennie Barnes was a strong-willed farm wife and mother who sacrificed her own needs to provide for her husband and two daughters, Wanda Barnes Scott and Ava Barnes Ashurst. Her determinations enabled her family to withstand sickness, the loss by fire of an entire crop, and the deprivation of the Great Depression.

Her legacy lives on in the words of the poem above, taught by her to her granddaughter. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren have been challenged to live life to its fullest and best by these treasured words.
