Stancil, Ermit and Lola

Our Story:

"We both began life in Johnston County, where Ermit was born on April 9, 1911 to Rev. William Debro and Lucy Broadwell Stancil and Lola was born to T.H. and Lula Dail Helms. We were married on March 14, 1936. We became the parents of Sue who was born on September 17, 1939 and David Terry who was born on March 20, 1945. Our grandchildren are David A. and Terry Todd Stancil and Caroline Ashley and Susanna Wesley Morris.

We started our life together farming and running a country store which we operated for 29 years. Tobacco was one of the most important crops for us.

Tobacco also became important to us in another way in 1939 when Liggett and Meyers Tobacco Company with Perry Como and Arthur Godfrey as hosts held an amateur auctioneering contest in Wilson and Ermit won it. He began his forty year career as an auctioneer the next year.

We worked hard and saved our money so that we could build our house and buy our land. We are now retired and living the good life together."
